Washington, DC (April 10, 2019) – Global Health Council welcomes the reintroduction of the Global Health Security Act of 2019 (bill number pending) by U.S. Representatives Gerry Connolly (D-VA) and Steve Chabot (R-OH). This bipartisan legislation supports the U.S. commitment to elevating global health security and the Global Health Security Agenda, an international partnership that works to build capacity to prepare for and respond to infectious disease outbreaks.
“In this increasingly interconnected world, it doesn’t take much for an outbreak – whether it’s Ebola or the flu – to become widespread. Investing in preparedness now will save lives and resources later,” stated Loyce Pace, President and Executive Director of Global Health Council. “This legislation recognizes the critical leadership role the United States plays in global health security efforts, and ensures that we are better prepared for an outbreak that could reach the U.S.”
Specifically, the Global Health Security Act strengthens interagency coordination on U.S. global health security activities and addresses the need for a permanent official responsible for coordinating between U.S. agencies during global health crises.
In addition to Representatives Connolly and Chabot, the Global Health Security Act is cosponsored by Representatives Ami Bera (D-CA), Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), Ann Wagner (R-MO), and Rick Larsen (D-WA).
The Global Health Security Act is endorsed by nine leading global health organizations, including Global Health Council.
